Start here: the whole site in 5 minutes
Nobody taught you money. Not what it is, not where it comes from, not the traps built into it. That is not your fault and it is not an accident: the people who understand this stuff mostly work for the people selling it. This page is the map. Five minutes, three big ideas, then you choose your own path.
Banks create most money when they lend, so most money is born as somebody's debt. Money loses buying power every year by design. And an entire industry earns its living from young people not knowing either fact. This site shows you the machinery, with receipts, so you can make your own choices.
Big idea one: money is typed into existence
About 97% of the UK's money is not notes and coins. It is numbers in bank accounts, and most of those numbers were created when a bank made a loan: the money did not exist until the borrower signed. That sounds like a conspiracy theory. It is the Bank of England's own published description of the system, and an economist once filmed it happening.
Start with the flagship: How do banks create money? Then, if it grabs you: what money actually is and the 5,000 year story in 10 moments.
Then the long reads, for anyone who wants to know who is holding the machinery: the secret meeting that wrote the Federal Reserve, who actually owns the banks, why you cannot simply start one yourself, and where the money that never gets taxed goes.
Big idea two: money fades on purpose
The pound is designed to lose a little buying power every year: the official target is 2%. Small numbers stack: £1 from 1971 does the work of about 5p today. This quietly punishes savers and wage earners and quietly helps big borrowers, and nobody voted on it.
Read: inflation, the version nobody tells you, then debasement: Rome to now, then the question everyone asks: why can't we just print more?
Big idea three: the traps are designed, and beatable
Store cards offered in a queue. Minimum payments built so debt survives. "Interest-free" instalments priced on the people who slip. 39.9% overdrafts wearing friendly names. None of these catch people by accident: they are engineered, which is exactly why knowing the design beats them.
Before any of that, the first money event of your life: your first payslip, and where the money went, with a checker you can put your own wage into, plus what you owe if you sell things online, and if you went to university, whether that loan is really a debt at all.
The guides, in reading order: what credit really is → buy now pay later, and the rules that changed in July 2026 → APR, the number that decides everything → the calculator that shows what a minimum payment really does → who keeps score on you → then the trap files: the overdraft you never applied for, store cards, crazy APRs, balance transfers, insurance, what a car really costs at seventeen, and the one that ends people's banking before it starts, money mules.
And the biggest thing you will ever sign for: renting your first flat and what it really costs to get the key, what a mortgage actually is, renting versus buying with the sums done both ways, and how anyone actually gets a deposit.
In a hurry?
One page holds every guide in screenshot form: the do and don't list. Keep the one-liner: find the real price, sleep on it, automate the escape, and always ask who profits.
Teaching this?
There is a free classroom pack: the England curriculum mapped page by page, three lessons you could teach tomorrow, and every page on this site prints clean as a handout. Nothing to sign up for and nothing to buy. The teachers page.
Every claim comes with a receipt. Primary sources, real percentages, dated figures, linked at the bottom of every page. Our method, and the lines we will not cross, are stated openly on the receipts page.
We sell nothing and recommend nothing. No products, no "buy this instead", no financial advice. Facts and questions. What you do with them is yours. Who we are and why we built this: the about page.
Questions people ask
Who is this site for?
Teenagers and young adults in the UK, mainly, though the machinery is the same everywhere. If you are about to get your first card, your first payslip, your first flat, or you have simply noticed that money behaves strangely and nobody explains it, this was built for you. No prior knowledge assumed, no jargon unexplained: there is a glossary for every term we use.
Where should I actually start?
If you want the big picture, the flagship: how banks create money. If you have a practical worry right now, a card, a debt, a score, go straight to that guides page: each one stands alone. If you have five minutes at a bus stop, the do and don't list.
Is this one of those conspiracy sites?
Judge for yourself, which is the whole idea. Our central claims are sourced to the Bank of England's own publications, a peer-reviewed academic paper, official statistics and lenders' own published rates, all linked. We publish our red lines openly on the receipts page, and anything we cannot source to a document you can open yourself does not go on the site.
